Choosing an Electric Motor for an eBike

The most popular motors for electric bicycles are brushless direct drive motors fitted to the wheel hub.

There are two things to consider when choosing a motor for your electric bicycle. Firstly you must decide what power level you require. Secondly you can purchase either front or rear drive motors.

The power level may range from 200W to 1000W. As stated in previous posts up to 200 watts is legal for street use in most states. The higher powered motors can usually be governed down in power via a computer. You could program a 1000W motor down to 200 watts for street use and crank it back up for using off road.

A rear mounted motor should mean better traction but could put too much weight on the back of the bike leading to less steering control. A front mounted motor is easier to fit and weight is more evenly distributed on the bicycle. Some people have fitted motors to both the front and rear wheels but it is much more difficult to control the two motors as one.
